A staggering 22 years after the invention of the electrophotography process by Chester Carlson the worlds first office photocopier, the 914, was produced and marketed to the masses in 1959. The 914 was a huge success selling more than 22 million units in just the first two years of it’s existence. The popular xerographic duplicator, soon to be renamed as the more pronounceable “photocopier” was soon seen as an essential tool for business, schools and, even in those early days of photocopying, a few wealthy home users too.
The popularity of the 914 photocopier lead to a surge in innovation by the printing industry with many manufacturers playing key roles in evolving the humble photocopier into the digital multi-functional devices we are familiar with today.
The advent of digital technologies into the photocopier industry lead to the advancement of printers, scanners and smaller desktop multi-functional products (MFP’s) with today’s digital photocopiers being more of an IT device than the traditional printing-press spin off approach.
