Scan or scanning refers to the process of creating a "digital photocopy" of a document.

Scanning works much like photocopying in that a document is placed between a sheet of glass and the lid of the scanner (in the case of flat-bed scanners,) but the result is a digital copy of the document instead of a paper copy of it.
